A stimulating two-day workshop for those wanting to work in more clinical depth with their clients.
In this workshop, led by Dr Helena Hargaden, we will explore the relationally complex, chaotic world of the unconscious. We will examine how use of your own sense of ‘self’ in the therapeutic process, can uncover hidden layers of meaning and bring significant and transformational change in your clients.
This approach requires you to welcome and be open to the transferential and counter transferential dynamics which emerge in the relational space between you and your client and to examine new ways of thinking about the deconfusion process and therapeutic direction. This way of working with clients requires you to work in a way that can seem to be less certain and less structured than other models of TA.
About the course
The ‘Eric Berne Memorial Award’ in 2007 was given for the Domains of Transference (Hargaden and Sills, 2002). This way of thinking offered a radical conceptual alternative to more traditional and linear ways of understanding the deconfusion process, which has become known as ‘relational TA’. Helena has continued to develop the relational approach in articles which integrate models of intersubjectivity, theories of mutuality and the bidirectionality of the relational unconscious.
What outcomes can I expect?
- This weekend involves learning about the theoretical underpinnings of relational TA which will be brought to life through a focus on experiential exercises and group discussions of client vignettes.
- You will gain a deeper understanding of the nature of transferential and intersubjective processes between yourself and your clients.
- Understanding that working with the relational unconscious is a bidirectional process and using your counter transference to make meaning.
- The ability to make a finer distinction between more traditional and linear thinking, as in classical TA, and non-linear thinking as in relational TA.
- A clearer sense of the process of creating and re-creating meaning, and organising experience

Meet the course leader
Helena Hargaden
Dr Helena Hargaden DPsych, MSc, BA (Hons), TSTA (Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst) is UKCP registered and a member of IARPP, EATA, and a co-founder of the International Association of Relational Transactional Analysis. She has a private psychotherapy and supervision practice in West Sussex. In collaboration with others she began the relational developments in transactional analysis and has been widely published and translated into a number of languages. In 2007, Helena was one of the recipients of the Eric Berne Memorial Award for the Domains of Transference, which recognised the evolutionary movement towards relational theory in transactional analysis.
