Introducing the Connexus Institute's "How to Write a Good Essay" course. This six-evening program, conducted via Zoom for increased accessibility, provides a gentle and interactive approach to mastering the essay writing process. Through engaging classes and practical homework assignments, participants will learn the essential techniques for effectively expressing thoughts and ideas in an academically appropriate style and format.

What does the Academic Writing course Cover?

Academic Writing Course Overview: Discover the essential elements of crafting compelling essays with our Academic Writing course. Each session builds upon the next, offering a comprehensive journey towards mastering the art of effective academic writing.

Sessions are held on Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

  • Thu Oct 10th, 2024 – 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "Getting started": Learn the fundamentals of academic writing, including criteria used by markers and formatting conventions.
  • Thu Oct 24th, 2024 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "The Anatomy of an Essay": Explore the structure of an essay and the academic building blocks from words to texts.
  • Thu Nov 7th, 2024 – 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "Citation and Referencing": Master the art of incorporating supporting material and utilising the Harvard referencing system.
  • Thu Nov 21st, 2024 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "Introductions and Conclusions": Craft engaging introductions, compelling conclusions, and provide essential background information.
  • Thu Dec 5th, 2024 – 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "Working with Diagrams": Learn to create and incorporate diagrams to enhance your understanding of theory.
  • Thu Dec 19th, 2024 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm: "Punctuation & editing": Master punctuation rules and effective proofreading techniques.

Please note: This course consists of all 6 sessions, and individual session attendance is not available.

What Outcomes Can I Expect?

This is an engaging and enjoyable course that will provide you with the structure, method and technique of how to write a good essay. At the end of the course you will:

Meet the course leader

Patrick Brook

As well as being the Academic Director of the Connexus Institute, Patrick Brook is a UKCP registered psychotherapist and supervisor, a Certified Transactional Analyst, CTA (P), a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst, TSTA (P) and an NCS Senior Accredited counsellor. Patrick has worked in education for over 25 years as a teacher, trainer and principal lecturer. His previous role as Director of a university languages department included managing a provision of academic writing support for all students within the university.
