This 60-hour course provides an exceptional opportunity to dive into the works of influential authors such as Stephen Mitchell, Phillip Bromberg, Jody Messler-Davies, and others to understand the profound psychoanalytic insights shaping contemporary psychotherapy and how they can inform and deepen your practice.
Aims of the Course:
In this comprehensive course, you will extend your understanding of crucial intersubjective processes at the heart of the Relational Psychoanalytic tradition, deepening your ability to:
- Understand the intricate dance within the therapeutic relationship and 'learn from your clients.'
- Navigate, tolerate and bear 'forbidden' and 'prohibited' material.
- Recognise the intricate unconscious dynamics of self-deception and how they influence your perceptions and interactions.
- Use your capacity for mentalisation - thinking about your thinking.
- Embrace the concept of the 'authority of tenderness' as espoused by authors like Williams, as well as qualities such as tenderness, kindness, honesty, and integrity.
Participant Information:
This course is limited to 12 clinically experienced (post-qualification) participants.
Each participant will be invited to join this journey with an open heart and a willingness to explore the depths of Relational Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and its practical application in their work. As a participant, you will be expected to:
- Dedicate time to read the material before each session so that you arrive prepared to delve into the subject matter with a critical and thoughtful perspective.
- Connect the course material with your ongoing practice to foster a deeper understanding of how Relational Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can enhance your work with clients.
- Embrace the opportunity for intense discussions that may explore the complex and sometimes uncomfortable territory of your responses to clients/patients, e.g., sleepiness, sexual feelings, shame, and other phenomena that involve both the therapist's unconscious and the client's experiences.
- Actively connect the content discussed in the course with the assigned reading material. This process will help solidify your understanding and enable you to apply relational psychoanalytic concepts effectively in your therapeutic practice.

Dr. Helena Hargaden (MSc., DPsych) is a distinguished Relational Psychotherapist, international speaker, coach, and supervisor. Her extensive expertise and contributions to the field exemplify her award-winning work on the "Domains of Transference" in the book Transactional Analysis: A Relational Perspective (Hargaden & Sills; Routledge, 2002).
