Neurdivergence, Mental Health and Therapeutic Processes

Introduction

Led by Tash Young, this event is a talk and discussion for qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to learn about, and reflect on, the nuances between neurodivergence, mental health and therapeutic processes. As we begin to increase our understanding of neurodivergence, the topic becomes ever more crucial for therapists and mental health professionals to understand and reflect on.

What does this workshop cover?

In this session, we will explore:

  • The problematic use of language, such as ‘disorder’, ‘condition’ and ‘diagnosis’, even ‘neurodivergence’

  • The gifts of the neurodivergent brain

  • The difference between an ‘environment first’ approach and a therapeutic need/ desire

  • Things to know about neurodivergent brains and use of language that can support client work

Using lived experience, a wide range of work with people with the gift of neurodivergence, and Autism training at the Anna Freud Centre, Tash will share her knowledge and thoughts on this subject. There will follow an opportunity to reflect together, share experiences and think about how our work may be impacted by a greater understanding of neurotypes.
